An orange K-type giant burns with serene warmth in the southern Pavo, the bird of a hundred celestial eyes. Its light took more than three hundred and fifty years to reach us, leaving when European kingdoms were signing the Peace of Westphalia and beginning to redraw the modern map. Cooler than the Sun yet enormously larger, its coppery ember brings life to this seldom-traveled corner of the sky.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 91854 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
