Peacock is the brightest star of Pavo, one of the southern constellations named by Dutch navigators in the late sixteenth century when they first charted the southern sky. It is a hot, young blue star, energetic and roughly 179 light-years away. Its modern name is unusual: the British Royal Air Force coined it in the 1930s for its air-navigation tables.
Where it is and when to see it
Peacock lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
