Delta Pavonis is one of the few truly neighbouring stars of the Sun that can still be seen with the naked eye: a mere 19.9 light-years separate this yellow G-type subgiant from our own system. By age, brightness, stability and composition it is a veteran solar twin, often listed among candidate stars for harbouring complex life. SETI has kept it on its priority target lists for decades.
Where it is and when to see it
Delta Pavonis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
