What is Epsilon Telescopium
Epsilon Telescopii is a yellow G-type giant about 418 light-years away, in a modern constellation drawn by Lacaille to honour the instrument that transformed astronomy. Its spectral type echoes that of the Sun, but the resemblance ends there: it has already exhausted the hydrogen in its core and swollen into a slow-burning lighthouse —a glimpse of our own star's distant fate.
Where it is and when to see it
Epsilon Telescopium lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
