Eta Telescopium
What is Eta Telescopium
Eta Telescopii is one of the well-identified members of the Beta Pictoris moving group, a stream of very young stars —barely twenty million years old— that share a common origin. A white type A star some 157 light-years away, it is surrounded by a debris disc, planetary-formation leftovers detected in the infrared. It is one of those systems that grant astronomers a rare window onto the earliest chapters in the life of a planetary court.
Where it is and when to see it
Eta Telescopium lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
