Xi Telescopii is a red giant or bright giant about 1,080 light-years away, swollen to 56 times the Sun's radius and radiating nearly three thousand times its luminosity. An aged star whose brightness shifts slightly on a twelve-day cycle, a signature of pulsation in its atmosphere. The light arriving tonight set out when Maya civilization was raising its final temples.

Xi Telescopium lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
