What is HIP 48191
An orange star in the modest constellation Antlia, the air pump. Its light has been travelling for 404 years: it set out when the Mayflower pilgrims were founding the Plymouth colony and Kepler was publishing his laws on planetary motion. A K-class star, cooler than the Sun, it gives off the warm, golden glow that distinguishes the quiet, mature stars of the firmament.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 48191 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
