In Antlia, a modern constellation honouring the invention that drew air out of a glass bell, shines an orange star of K type. Cooler than the Sun, it unfolds a warm, steady amber. It is a discreet point in a southern figure rarely remembered, like a forgotten ember inside a scientific instrument that had been gathering dust for generations on a celestial shelf.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 48748 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
