What is HIP 50103
Antlia —the Air Pump traced by Lacaille— is among the most subdued constellations of the austral sky. Within it pulses this K-class orange at four hundred and eighty light-years. Its light set out around 1546, in the months when Andreas Vesalius was publishing in Basel the second edition of his De humani corporis fabrica. An anonymous star in a firmament rarely contemplated from northern hemispheres.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 50103 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
