Upsilon Capricorni is a cool, enormous red M-type giant, whose reddish hue is noticeable even to a trained observer. It sits in the final stages of stellar life, swollen to dimensions that would engulf several planetary orbits of our own solar system. Its light, after travelling 580 years through the void, arrives faint but tinted a deep red from the constellation of the Sea Goat.
Where it is and when to see it
Upsilon Capricorni lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
