What is 46 Capricorni

46 Capricorni is a yellow G-type star lost almost 800 light-years deep within the geometric back of the celestial Goat. It shares the Sun's spectral class, yet its magnitude 5.1 at such a distance only makes sense for a body of vastly greater luminosity —the mark of an advanced giant. When these photons set out, somewhere in the 12th century, no European astronomer had yet sketched the moons of Jupiter.

46 Capricorni lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 29° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 40° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 65° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 81° N.

It ranks no. 20 in brightness among the 48 stars of Capricornus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Deneb Algedi, the brightest: it lies about 7° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
