What is 46 Capricorni

46 Capricorni is a yellow G-type star lost almost 800 light-years deep within the geometric back of the celestial Goat. It shares the Sun's spectral class, yet its magnitude 5.1 at such a distance only makes sense for a body of vastly greater luminosity —the mark of an advanced giant. When these photons set out, somewhere in the 12th century, no European astronomer had yet sketched the moons of Jupiter.

46 Capricorni lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
