7 Arietis is a variable K-type orange giant 558 light-years away, in the Ram that opens the zodiac. Its brightness is not steady: it shifts gently, a stellar breathing imperceptible to the naked eye. Tonight's light set out when Constantinople still held out under the Byzantine flag, and it crossed five full centuries to reach us.
Where it is and when to see it
7 Arietis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
