56 Arietis is a massive blue-white B-type star with a heartbeat of its own: a variable studied as a prototype of chemically peculiar, rapidly rotating stars. It lies some 503 light-years away in the Ram, the first constellation of the zodiac. Its light set out around 1523, just after Magellan and Elcano had completed the first circumnavigation of the globe, and now crosses the winter sky pulsing discreetly.
Where it is and when to see it
56 Arietis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
