7 Arietis is a variable K-type orange giant 558 light-years away, in the Ram that opens the zodiac. Its brightness is not steady: it shifts gently, a stellar breathing imperceptible to the naked eye. Tonight's light set out when Constantinople still held out under the Byzantine flag, and it crossed five full centuries to reach us.
