Bharani takes her name from the second lunar mansion of the Hindu zodiac, a division of the sky that Vedic astronomy used to follow the Moon's monthly path. A hot blue star in Aries at 166 light-years, she is set in a constellation we now associate with the spring equinox. Her modern designation is a cosmological homage to an observational tradition far older than the Western one.

Bharani lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
