What is Botein
Botein takes its name from the Arabic «al-buṭayn», «the little belly», a reference to the body of the celestial ram in Aries. An orange K-class giant about 170 light-years away, it is an ageing star that has swollen beyond its original size and cooled to the colour of incandescent copper. Its light set out at the height of the Spanish Empire, when galleons were regularly crossing the Pacific between Manila and Acapulco.
Where it is and when to see it
Botein lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
