What is Botein

Botein takes its name from the Arabic «al-buṭayn», «the little belly», a reference to the body of the celestial ram in Aries. An orange K-class giant about 170 light-years away, it is an ageing star that has swollen beyond its original size and cooled to the colour of incandescent copper. Its light set out at the height of the Spanish Empire, when galleons were regularly crossing the Pacific between Manila and Acapulco.

Where it is and when to see it

Botein lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 58° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 69° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 36° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 70° S.

It ranks no. 5 in brightness among the 57 stars of Aries in our catalogue. To find it, start from Hamal, the brightest: it lies about 15° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
