What is Pi Coronae Borealis

Pi Coronae Borealis is a yellow G-type giant some 243 light-years away, set in the small northern crown. This constellation, a semicircle of faint stars, evokes the crown of Ariadne thrown into the sky by Dionysus in Greek myth. Pi is one of the secondary lights surrounding bright Alphecca, the jewel of the band, lending volume and depth to the delicate celestial arc.

Pi Coronae Borealis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
