What is 39 Andromedae
39 Andromedae is a peculiar Am-type star: its atmosphere shows anomalous chemical abundances, with metals in excess and lighter elements depleted, the result of slow rotation that allows the elements to settle. It shines at 350 light-years within Andromeda, the chained princess of the autumn sky, famous for hosting the nearest galaxy to our own. Its light departed around the start of the seventeenth century.
Where it is and when to see it
39 Andromedae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
