What is HIP 37379
In Puppis, the stern of the ancient ship Argo, sails this orange K-type giant —cool and serene compared with its spectral neighbours. Its mellow light has travelled 695 years, so it set out when Luther was nailing his theses in Wittenberg in 1517. Larger than the Sun and gentler at the surface, it keeps the coppery flush of stars that have already lived much of their lives.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 37379 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
