A red ember of type M, hanging in Puppis some 861 light years away. Its light set out around the 12th century, when Gothic cathedrals were beginning to rise across Europe and the University of Bologna was already teaching its first students. Cooler than the Sun and almost crimson in tone, it inhabits an advanced stage in which its atmosphere has swollen and reddened. A slow, deep flame burning with the calm of very ancient things.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 33357 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
