At 753 light years in the Stern, this blue B-type star is light that was already travelling when Cervantes finished the first part of Don Quixote. At magnitude 5.03 it brushes the limit of what unaided eyes can detect on a clear night, and through a telescope it shows the bluish-white signature of the hottest stars. Its spectral type places it among the massive bodies that light the spiral arms of the Milky Way with a brilliance barely tempered by time.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 35226 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
