What is HIP 32740

Among the celestial Twins, about 416 light years away, a variable orange K-type star breathes with a slightly changing brightness. Its light departed around 1610, just as Galileo was pointing his telescope at Jupiter and discovering its four major moons, suddenly opening the era of modern astronomy. Cooler than the Sun, swollen and warm in tone, it pulses with the faint cadence of aged stars. The brothers Castor and Pollux flank it from afar, letting it shine in a secondary position but with a character of its own.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 32740 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
