54 Piscium is one of the most studied stars in Flamsteed’s catalogue: an orange dwarf only thirty-six light-years away, a close neighbour of the Sun in cosmic terms. In 2002 a Saturn-sized planet was found around it, and a few years later a small brown dwarf was also detected orbiting the system —one of the first confirmed substellar companions around a nearby sun. Its system is a natural laboratory for understanding worlds like our own.
