What is Gamma Piscium

Gamma Piscium is one of the stars that traces the famous Western Circlet of Pisces, that small polygon of faint suns nestled below the Great Square of Pegasus. It is a yellow G-type giant some 138 light-years away, an old traveler that has exhausted the hydrogen in its core and now drifts through stellar maturity. Its soft, steady glow is one of the knots in the mythological cord that binds the two fish.

Gamma Piscium lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 42° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 53° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 53° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 87° S.
