In the luminous chariot of Auriga shines a white A-type sun whose light began its journey 277 years ago. When it set out, the Montgolfier brothers had not yet imagined the first balloon flight, and electricity was a matter for parlours. Hotter and more luminous than our Sun, its cool white recalls freshly polished ice under moonlight, a serene flash among the eternal reins of the charioteer.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 27973 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
