Menkalinan means «the shoulder of the rein-holder», a tribute to the mythical charioteer of Auriga. It is a variable star: two suns so close they eclipse each other every four days, dimming in a regular blink first noticed in the late nineteenth century. At 81 light-years, its white light reached our night sky when Europe's earliest radios were learning to speak.
Where it is and when to see it
Menkalinan lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
