What is Saclateni

Saclateni accompanies Almaaz in Auriga, part of the small group of «the Kids» belonging to the Charioteer. It is an orange K-type giant 786 light-years away, slightly variable. Its Arabic name derives from «As-Sa‘d ath-thānī», «the second fortune». The light seen tonight set out from it when the Black Death was beginning to sweep across Europe: it has crossed entire centuries of human history, indifferent and steady, before reaching the modern observer's retina.

Where it is and when to see it

Saclateni lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
