Hassaleh, in Auriga, is a luminous orange giant whose traditional name survives without a clear etymology, likely a late transliteration. It shines with several thousand times the power of the Sun, which explains its intensity despite a distance of 494 light-years. The light reaching us today set out in the first half of the sixteenth century, when Copernicus was publishing that the Earth orbits the Sun.
Where it is and when to see it
Hassaleh lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
