What is 5 Aurigae
5 Aurigae is a yellow-white F-type star 195 light-years away in the Charioteer, that pentagonal winter constellation crowned by bright Capella. It is a sun a touch hotter than ours, with the serene chroma of F-type atmospheres. Its light, which set out in the 19th century, reaches today's catalogues alongside that of many more celebrated sisters.
Where it is and when to see it
5 Aurigae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
