What is HIP 21685
An orange star in Eridanus, the celestial river meandering across the southern sky. Its light set out 196 years ago, when steam ships were making their first transatlantic crossings and photography was taking its initial steps in Paris. A K-class object, cooler and more restful than the Sun, it shines with the amber hue characteristic of mature stars that have long since abandoned youthful haste.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 21685 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
