53 Aquarii is not one star but two — a G-type binary system just 66 light-years away. Two yellow suns, much like our own, dance around each other in an orbit the eye cannot resolve but telescopes can. Its light takes less than a human lifetime to arrive; the year it left is still within the memory of grandparents.
Where it is and when to see it
53 Aquarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
