5 Aquarii is a hot B-type star 650 light-years away, a blue-white flame leaning over the Water Bearer, the constellation that lends its name to an astrological age. Its surface runs at tens of thousands of degrees, far harsher than the Sun's. The region also shelters the Eta Aquariids meteor shower, linked to comet Halley.
Where it is and when to see it
5 Aquarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
