Sadalsuud, «the luckiest of the lucky» for medieval Arab astrologers, rises in Aquarius, the water-bearer. It is a rare yellow supergiant of class G, thousands of times more luminous than the Sun, lying 537 light years away. Its light set out shortly before Columbus crossed the Atlantic and travels for centuries before reaching a human eye.
Where it is and when to see it
Sadalsuud lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
