What is 96 Aquarii
96 Aquarii is a multiple system disguised as a single point: a white-yellow F-type star bound to a second component that is itself a spectroscopic binary, with an inner eccentric orbit lasting just under two years. Just over one hundred light-years away, its light set out when astronomical photography was beginning to capture the first stellar plates of the southern sky.
Where it is and when to see it
96 Aquarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
