Alshat is a hot blue B-class star 253 light years away, set within the goat-fish of Capricornus. Its Arabic name «al-shāt» means «the sheep», recalling a now nearly forgotten asterism in which the star appeared as a sacrificial animal beside the neighbouring zodiacal figures. Its light departed around 1770, in the midst of the European Enlightenment.
Where it is and when to see it
Alshat lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
