What is 59 Sagittarii
59 Sagittarii is a bright orange giant lying close to the galactic plane, a single degree from Omega Sagittarii. It belongs to that rare class of stars that have swollen to roughly a hundred solar radii: an aging Sun at monumental scale. Its light crosses some eight hundred years to reach us; when it departed, the Gothic cathedrals of Europe were barely beginning to rise.
Where it is and when to see it
59 Sagittarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
