In the modest southern Telescope shines another orange K-class giant, whose coppery light travelled more than five hundred and thirty years before reaching our eyes. When it left, Europe was watching Constantinople fall and Gutenberg's press was beginning to transform the world of the manuscript. Its atmosphere, far wider than the Sun's but cooler, belongs to that long, serene phase in which ageing stars become patient beacons of the sky.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 95690 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
