In the southern Telescope, another of the technical constellations Lacaille named after scientific instruments, a white variable star pulses 397 light-years away. Its light departed just as Galileo —in delicious irony— had begun the very use of the telescope. The star oscillates faintly, as if winking back at the constellation that observes it.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 96178 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
