Kappa Telescopium
What is Kappa Telescopium
Kappa Telescopii is a yellow G-type star some two hundred and seventy light-years away, in another of the southern constellations with which Lacaille populated the southern sky. Telescopium was his tribute to the instrument that had revolutionised astronomy a century and a half earlier. Kappa shines as an older sibling of the Sun —same spectral family, already further along its life.
Where it is and when to see it
Kappa Telescopium lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
