In the small southern constellation of Telescopium shines an aged M-type red giant 1,036 light-years away. Its light began its journey around the year 990, as the Christian kingdoms of northern Iberia pushed southward during the Reconquista. Much cooler than the Sun and enormously swollen, it spills an ancient reddish glow, like an ember that refuses to fade.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 92630 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
