What is HIP 8241

An unnamed white star within the long course of Eridanus, its light set out 202 years ago, when Europe was emerging exhausted from the Napoleonic wars. Hotter than the Sun and bearing a distinctive silver glow, it belongs to that A-type family which first hinted to astronomers at rapid rotation and circumstellar disks. A crisp imprint on the celestial river.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 8241 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never rises above the horizon.
From New York it never rises above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 70° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 36° N.

It ranks no. 49 in brightness among the 129 stars of Eridanus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Achernar, the brightest: it lies about 4° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).

The light you see today left it about 200 years ago.
