What is 60 Eridani
60 Eridani shines with a class-K orange hue along the winding course of Eridanus, the celestial river that meanders south from Orion. At 236 light-years away, this cool giant radiates from a surface far more extended than the Sun's. Its light, cast into space late in the eighteenth century, departed while William Herschel was still polishing mirrors and discovering Uranus, unaware he had opened a new window onto the solar system.
Where it is and when to see it
60 Eridani lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
