What is 45 Eridani
45 Eridani is a distant orange giant, 656 light-years away, set along the long meander of the celestial River Eridanus as it drifts toward the southern sky. K-type, it radiates a coppery glow, the kind worn by suns that have already swollen their atmospheres. Its light crossed the entire Middle Ages to arrive punctually at our night, unwitnessed until an eighteenth-century astronomer pinned it on his chart.
Where it is and when to see it
45 Eridani lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
