What is HIP 44936

Along the spine of Hydra shines a yellow G-type star, similar to the Sun in temperature but lying some four hundred fifty-three light-years away. Its light departed as Cervantes had just published the first part of Don Quixote and the roads of Castile were still busy with innkeepers and muleteers. To look at it is to see the light of a distant Sun born at the height of the Golden Age: a golden taper, kin to our own, lit four centuries ago.

HIP 44936 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
