What is HIP 46813
In Hydra shines a white A-type star, hotter and more luminous than the Sun. Its light began its journey some 377 years ago: it set out around 1648, the year of the Peace of Westphalia that ended the Thirty Years' War and redrew the political map of Europe. That diaphanous glow now crosses the long winding body of the most extensive constellation in the sky.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 46813 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
