What is 34 Lynx

34 Lyncis lies about 180 light-years away within the Lynx, a constellation so faint that Hevelius gave it that name because only those with lynx eyes could spot it. It is a type-G star much like our Sun, a distant sister burning with the same yellow palette. Its light set out at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Where it is and when to see it

34 Lynx lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
