Nearly fifteen hundred light years separate this blue B-type giant from Earth: its light departed while Justinian was issuing the Corpus Iuris Civilis in Constantinople. It dwells in the ship Puppis and burns at temperatures several times those of the Sun, painting that bluish hue characteristic of the hottest and most youthful suns.

HIP 40943 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
