What is 6 Puppis
6 Puppis shines warm some 255 light-years away, an orange K-type giant set within the Stern, austral fragment of the ancient Argo Navis. Its light, several thousand degrees cooler than the Sun's, reaches our telescopes amber and serene. The beam now crossing Earth's atmosphere set out in the eighteenth century, when European navigators still used these southern skies to correct their course across the ocean.
Where it is and when to see it
6 Puppis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
