What is 20 Puppis
20 Puppis is a yellow G-type giant set in the Stern, a fragment of ancient Argo Navis, the ship of Jason broken apart by eighteenth-century astronomers. Almost nine hundred light-years away, its light departed when the Iberian Christian kingdoms were still reshaping themselves. It shines discreetly amid the stellar profusion of the southern Milky Way.
Where it is and when to see it
20 Puppis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
