Hot, bluish-white and variable, this Puppis B-star —the stern of the old ship Argo— pulses to the rhythm of its restless atmosphere. Its light has been crossing space for 516 years: it set out around 1510, while Michelangelo was painting the Sistine vault and Renaissance brushes were touching, for the first time, the finger of God.

HIP 38167 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
